During the realization of a garment, among the various phases there’s also that of finishing the edges, which allows to make your garment more complete and resistant. Why is it so important to realize it? It’s essential to avoid the slipping off edges, without giving the look of a real tailored garment to your creation! Do you think it’s difficult to finish the edges to complete a garment? You have to know that there are more ways to finish them and we’re ready to see the main ones with you to help you in this phase of processing of your new garment! Are you ready to discover them? The most recurring edges finishing methods: by hand; zig zag; profiled; trimmings; overlocker. Now we see them one by one, so you don’t have doubts about the finishing of the edges of your garment… there won’t be no more secrets for you! To finish the edges by hand consider a seam allowance of 1 cm for light fabrics, and 2 cm for heavier fabrics. First of all iron the edges so that they are well flat. Realize a topstitch on the wrong side to fix the edges. To realize the topstitch, bring the thread from the wrong side to the right side. Proceeding from right to left, thread the needle into the fabric and exit to the left, taking some threads with the needle. Then go back to the starting point and move of a few thread. Maintain the same number of threads each time, to have stitches of equal size. After topstitching, iron the seam allowances to flatten them. The zig-zag finishing is the most used. Moreover it’s also used to mend a garment or to embroider, since its motif appears very lively and racy. To finish the edges with zigzag stitch, using the sewing machine, you have to thread the needle on the fabric and then on the outside, realizing a series of alternating stitches, making the fabric crawl. The finishing with profiled edge is widely used for outerwear without a lining and which need to be finished internally. To profile the edge of a fabric you have to use the bias tape. How to apply the bias tape? Let join the unfinished edges of the bias tape using an internal side pleat. Pin to match the bias to the fabric. Overlap 1cm and start sewing the bias to your fabric. Then proceed ironing inside the garment. Sew, again, as close as possible to the folded edge of the bias from the right side. An easy way to refine the edges is to use a trimmings. You can find them in different types, colored ones, with floral or frayed ones, perforated and even jewel ones. So you can adapt them to your needs, choosing the one that best suits your creation. Do you want to know how to apply it? Take needle and thread! The trimmings can be used both to finish and to give a decorative element. You can sew it with a running stitch or an invisible stitch. The first one is perfect for small trimmings, the second one is perfect for more important trimmings. After sewing, you have to apply a cord by making an invisible stitch on the wrong side of the fabric. By using the overlocker you can finish the edges quickly and precisely. Proceed placing your fabric under the presser foot and sew to finish the edges. There are various types, with different types of stitches and also with stitching for decorations, as well as speed in processing.
